We study the 195 sūtras of the Yogasūtras of Patañjali as the oldest preserved Sanskrit work dealing with yoga as a system of spiritual liberation through meditation. While there has been an explosion of written commentaries on the printed editions of the Yogasūtras in recent times, there has, in fact, been very little research on original manuscripts. All our printed editions rely on a very small number of manuscripts. In 2006 Philipp Maas published the first critical edition of the Samādhi Pāda of Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras. Tracing thirty-seven printed editions and eighty-two manuscripts, Maas demonstrated that the sūtras are, in fact, part of a larger text, the Pātañjalayogaśāstra, consisting of the sūtras and the bhāṣya (commentary), for many years thought to be composed at a later date by Vyāsa. We have been studying the dot-point summary without the commentary! Catch up on this new understanding of the Pātañjalayogaśāstra in our July mentoring session. Kamala is currently studying the Sanskrit critical edition of the Samādhi Pāda with Philipp Maas from the University of Leipzig.
